Black Hawk County School Based Big of the Year

Congratulations NAN KANE, Black Hawk County School Based Big of the Year!

 

Nan Kane began her time with Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2009 and has been active in her role as a Big Sister mentor ever since.  Nan has been matched with her current Little Sister, Mo'randa since December 9, 2011.  They enjoyed their time together in school so much that in February 2012 they transferred their match to the School Based Plus program.  Nan and Mo’randa meet once a week at school and once or twice a week outside of school.  At school, Nan and Mo’randa play games, share in conversation and work on school work.  Outside of school they enjoy attending Big Brothers Big Sisters' events, watching movies, going to all of the local swimming pools, baking and just spending quality time with one another.

Mo’randa's mother suffers from illness and limited mobility and felt her children could benefit from the services offered at Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Mo'randa became a Little Sister to discover new opportunities and experiences in life.  Nan has taken her role as a mentor very seriously and has developed a strong relationship with Mo'randa's family.  Nan attends Mo’randa’s school performances and activities and she and her husband, Dave, take Mo’randa and her siblings to church every week.  Mo’randa’s mother is grateful for the support her children receive and the friendship her daughter has found.

Bremer County Community Based Big of the Year

Bremer County honors BARB LUTZ as the Community Based Big of the Year!

Barb has been matched with her Little Sister, Hannah since January 2010.  Before Barb was matched with Hannah, she was asked if she was willing to follow Hannah to different towns since Hannah’s family tends to move several times a year.  Barb said that she would and has followed Hannah to many towns and homes ever since.  Barb has been a very reliable person in Hannah’s life.  She has given Hannah the opportunity to experience a variety of activities:  making a quilt, signing Hannah up for her first track meet, attending Wartburg productions, science expos, rock climbing and swimming at the W, but their favorite is always their signature snack, cream cheese and ham bagels with pickles. 

 

Hannah's mother believes her daughter feels special because someone gets to focus on her, and since Hannah has eight siblings in her family,  this is very important!

Bremer County School Based Big of the Year

Bremer County honors RUTH MICK as the
School Based Big of the Year!

Ruth has been matched with her Little Sister, Jayden, since 2007. 

Ruth has met with Jayden once a week at school for six years.  Some of the activities that Ruth and Jayden have done together throughout the years include:  working on schoolwork, playing games, making bracelets, and now that Jayden is in 7^th grade, they talk about friends or just chat.  Ruth and Jayden have built a very trusting and dependable relationship.  

 

Jayden states "my favorite part about being matched with Ruth is when I'm sad, Ruth makes me feel better.  Ruth is really fun and it is fun to play games with her since she is not really good at them."  Jayden also likes that Ruth likes to try new things.  Jayden thinks Ruth is an awesome Big Sister!
